Tuesday tip: The Browser part 2

Last week, we talked about how the Browser can be used with services to choose different options and build your worship step-by-step. This week, we thought we’d show you a little more about the Browser and how you can both use it on its own and some useful tips for searching.

Tuesday tip: The Browser, part 1

Today’s top tip is all about getting the most out of the Browser in Visual Liturgy. For those of you that have been on one of our Visual Liturgy training days, you will know just how much importance we put on the Browser feature by making it the first thing we talk about.

Ascension Day pause

Another Tuesday tip will be coming along later today but we wanted to note that the blog will get a bit of a pause this week because of Ascension Day on Thursday. CHP kindly give their staff the day off and so we won’t be around to give you an update this coming week. However, watch out for the Friday fill-in on the 2nd of June where we’ll be showing some draft interface designs and inviting your comments.

Tuesday tip: Singing from the same hymn sheet

For today’s Tuesday tip I am going to show you how to customise your very own hymn selection list. Each church has its favourite hymn books and it is very easy to tell Visual Liturgy what those favourite sources are.

This means that when you are picking hymns for your service you don’t have to trawl through mountains of material but instead you can just get Visual Liturgy to pick from the list of your chosen hymn books and therefore save you a great deal of time and effort. Continue reading

Friday fill-in: Visual Liturgy does CRE

Since I joined the Church House Publishing team as Assistant New Media Manager last summer I have had the privilege of being part of the Visual Liturgy project team. A growing part of my job has been firstly going to Visual Liturgy training days and then leading them.

These training days and seminars have taken me the length and breadth of the country and I have loved the opportunity to meet the people actually using our product. This week I have met a few of you at the Christian Resources Exhibition in Sandown Park, Esher where I have been running Visual Liturgy seminars all week.

Tuesday tip: Using the Services planner

The Services planner was introduced in Visual Liturgy 4.0 to help churches get a sense of all their service planning over time. By seeing all your saved services at a glance, you can check the flow of a set of readings over a period of time, whether you are always singing the same hymns and songs or whether someone is doing too many jobs (or not enough)! With all that information available, organizing and making sense of it is paramount.

Friday fill-in: Visual Liturgy Style Magic

This week we had a discussion about the Visual Liturgy data format. One of the major changes between VL3 and VL4 was the move from Rich Text Format to HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for the text format. This gives users a lot of flexibility in how services are displayed. When VL 4.0 was first released you had to manually edit the CSS to take advantage of this, but that is no longer the case. If you go to the File menu and choose Styles, you can use a simple stylesheet editor built into Visual Liturgy.

Tuesday tip: Using “Tile vertically”

When you are creating services or even working with your own templates, it can be a long and involved process to edit one of the templates provided by Visual Liturgy. One thing you can do to help is to use the ability to tile services side by side.

Friday fill-in: Documentation ready to roll

David Green, Project Manager for Visual Liturgy, notes a significant milestone has been reached for Visual Liturgy Live.

While there may not be much happening on the surface of Visual Liturgy at present, the team have been hard at work getting all the documentation ready for the new release –  Visual Liturgy Live. Primarily, it my responsibility to draft these documents and get them to the point where everyone agrees what we are going to be doing.

Tuesday tip: Hiding Bible verse numbers

Because all of the texts in Visual Liturgy are semantically tagged, it is relatively easy to make changes to your formatting so that they apply across all of your services. An example is the ability to hide verse numbers from Bible readings.
